Why it works
This vignette is juvenile but sophisticated...with universal appeal for boys, obviously and girls, many of whom LOVE horses...especially here in Tennessee!
Click on the picture above to view a larger image. A separate window will open. It photographs beautifully much like a magazine/catalog photo shoot to entice buyers looking on line...to come SEE the house in PERSON. 80+% of Buyers interviewed say photos greatly determine interest in visiting the property. Its all about the marketing! This vignette enhances what would otherwise be an unremarkable, ordinary, small third bedroom. Buyers want to buy up...prestige plays a big factor. The few furnishings make a lasting impression.
Kid Appeal...never underestimate it. Wow factor will win a child's favor every time!!! This theme has a broad age appeal.
What we did
Inspiration first came from the southwestern art the sellers had in the house. They were DELIGHTED how cleverly we integrated it into the boy's room.
Whenever possible, we stage using the sellers furnishings that inspire a simple juvenile theme.
Made the bed with LESS to make MORE... Look closely, the bed is covered in a flat full sheet on a twin inflatable mattress. The twin plaid blanket is placed sideways, covering the foot of the bed and folded back halfway, so the green sheet covering the mattress is exposed for contrast (and to shorten the bed, especially effective in a small space). Pillows and a few furry friends add some fanciful whimsey, without distraction.
ALWAYS, have a simple bed side table and a coordinating lamp. Lighting is key...dress the table with three small items of varying size and mass.
Balance the room with a chair, small dresser, table, trunk....opposite the bed.
DIY Staging - What/Where to Purchase Items for our Boy Room Vignette
Here is a Step-By-Step of how we created a very successful Staged kids vignette (kid/cowboy meets Ralph Lauren theme...popular here in Middle Tennessee known for its gorgeous horse farms).
It all started with a dark denim standard pillow sham that I found for $ 7.00 ( on sale) at TJ Maxx.
That was the real beginning of the equestrian theme. Next, I stopped by my favorite antique/ junk shop on the way home to find THE PERFECT head board. It was a $3.00 ( marked down, mind you ) old rusty red garden trellis, definitely hand made and very light weight. That is always a big plus when staging !! It was sitting on the front porch in the garden section...and as such, very humble looking, which explains the LOW price.
Feeling inspired/ fortunate, I wandered further into the Garden section to find a filthy but interesting natural pine" mill stool" marked $24.00 !!! It was love at first sight...duct tape and all !! Although I will admit the duct tape was a real challenge to remove... so was the dirt for that matter.
Howard's Wood Cleaner and Wood Treatment made the bench look better that I thought possible. I purchased Howard's at the recommendation of the antique shop....figuring who knows old wood better than a dealer !!
Once I had the pine bench which could double as a bed side table, and the head board...I was on a mission to complete the vignette.
My next stop was running to our local Target for an inflatable mattress.$ 19.99. Walmart has them for less approx $17.00.
The Dollar store sells white plastic $ 6.00 milk crates which we found more convenient than a bed frame...they're taller making one mattress work instead of two....and much lighter to carry. We bought six....they are multifunctional. When we move the vignette, the crates will carry the bedding and accessories.
A quick stop to Bed Bath and Beyond resulted in my finding a great sale on a down (plaid) blanket...perfect colors, and horse blanket style. The 20% expired BBB coupon I had with me was HONORED...in fact they always honor their expired coupons, another reason to love that store.
Marshals had a Ralph Lauren $3.00 full flat sheet in the exact green to pull the look together. I have found that flat sheets a size or two larger than the mattress completely eliminates the need for fitted sheets and dust skirts all together both of which I'd rather not use in staging. They don't fit tightly over the inflatable mattress and wrinkle!
JoAnns has pillow forms in all sizes, so I went in looking for a euro sham insert on sale for $12.99 and came out with a great looking brown faux suede pillow for $20.00.
TJMaxx had a denim twin Ralph Lauren comforter for $39.99. I grabbed it despite the fact it wasn't on sale.
Ross for Less was a new experience for me. I had not shopped there before...which has now changed !!
For $4.99 each, I bought THE most perfect accessory pillows. One with the look of STRAW and two with a Southwestern/ Indian blanket theme....DONE !! Their lamp shades are the best price when they have them...as low as $3.00 for a six inch shade!! Great Ralph Lauren bedding selection in all sizes.
For the final kid touches:
Goodwill had a basket full of brand new stuffed animals, so I bought a small green frog and a brown bear to place on the bed. (It sells KID ) The cute $1.95 cowboy hat was just what we needed to hang on the bed.
Two medal stars( big/small) popular here in gift shops were $5.00 and $3.00 respectively. They add just the right touch of whimsey.
The horse shoe was a gift /free.We feel it brings "luck"
Lamp was one we already had...purchased from Target ( $12.00) with a shade slip cover made from scrap booking faux leather paper and grommets.
The folding chair is vintage Pottery Barn from their first catalog...priceless. :-) Return to Home Page from DIY Staging Boy Room Pictures |
